Article: What I’m Reaching for This Winter

What I’m Reaching for This Winter
Today is the start of winter, and I’m doing what most of us probably are, looking for ways to stay warm, stay inside, and make home feel a little more inviting.
The cold has well and truly set in here in Melbourne here’s what I’ve been turning to this season — a mix of items, habits and everyday comforts that are making the cold feel a bit more liveable.
Reading: The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt
A fascinating, confronting read about the rise of anxiety and depression among young people — and how the shift to screen-based childhoods plays a major role. It’s not light, but it’s important. I’ve found myself highlighting page after page. A good one to read, reflect on, and talk about over dinner.

Scent: Sweater Weather candle by April Blossom Co
The name says it all — this candle smells like winter in the best way. With notes of bergamot, cypress and musk, it’s clean but cosy, like fresh air on cold mornings and your favourite knit. I’ve been lighting it in the late afternoons, and it instantly makes the house feel warmer — even before the heater kicks in.

Sound: A playlist for quieter evenings
I’ve been listening to a lot of Nils Fraham made up of soft instrumentals, and quiet background warmth. It’s what I put on while I cook, fold laundry, or wind down in the evening. Nothing fancy, just something to accompany the everyday.

Wear: Stonewashed linen robe
This is the first thing I reach for in the morning. Soft, relaxed, and well-worn in the best way. It’s not styled — it’s lived in. And it’s part of what makes cold, dark mornings feel a little less abrupt.

Texture: Heavyweight linen throw
Our heavyweight throw lives draped over the sofa, but really, it follows me everywhere. Over my knees while I work, around my shoulders for that last cup of tea, folded neatly over the bed. It has substance, but never feels heavy.

Comfort: Pure linen cushions
Our linen cushions are scattered through the house, across the couch, on the bed, underfoot in a pinch. Nothing precious, just soft things that make the house feel layered and lived in.

Ritual: Chai that actually tastes like chai
I’m Indian, and this is by far the most authentic-tasting chai I’ve come across outside of a family kitchen. These sachets from Mumbai Cutting Chai are rich, properly spiced, and incredibly convenient.

Final Note
When it’s cold outside, it’s the small things that make being indoors more bearable, a hot cup of chai, a warm throw, a good book. Nothing fancy, just simple comforts that help the days feel easier.
If you’re settling in for the season, I hope this list gives you a few useful ideas.
